Week 1 (30/8 - 3/9)
Introductions and setting up
This was the first week of my internship, meaning it was largely exploratory and consisted of me Googling lots of stuff and having meetings. That was, of course, not the only thing I did: I worked on my project plan and the research report about facial analysis.
Introduction to the project
I had various meetings with both my coach (Luuk) and client/project lead (Wouter). These were intended to better get to grips with the project and what the desired result is. The meetings were mostly introductory, though the first order of business was getting an image of where the project currently stands. I was part of a brief meeting providing a general overview before my internship started, but the meat-and-potatoes was my meeting with Sjaak. In this, we went over the current prototype and its feature set. As my task is to translate this to a cloud application, this was very helpful and it will remain a reference for me.
My main concern was getting a clear image of what Wouter wanted to see at the end of the internship. In doing this, I can set clear goals in my project plan and think about how I aim to accomplish them. Speaking of which...
Project plan
My project plan contains an overview of what my goals are and how I aim to reach them. As it is the first deliverable and also the main document the rest of my project rests on, this is my first priority.
At the time of writing, the most important sections are more or less complete and I have a clear view of what to work on. Items such as a project timeline etc. will be informed by the research running concurrently and the conclusions I come to when investigating the current prototype.
Research Report: Facial Analysis
From the outset I asked Wouter what he wanted to see in the short-term. The answer to this was a research report containing an overview of the current prototype, a comparison of the various facial analysis libraries and, finally, my proposal as to how it could be translated to a cloud-based application.
Though this report was not yet my focus, I have put some thought into what a cloud-based translation of the prototype could look like. This will be outlined in the actual report and in the Cloud-based architecture proposals section. Furthermore, I found a paper in which the libraries are compared. Exactly what I was looking for! The results will be interpreted and summarised in my report, after which I can make a decision as to what to pursue.
