Career Prospects

Elaborating on whether I have achieved my personal goal of investigating career prospects.

Defining The Goal

As my degree comes to a close, I realise it is of paramount importance to investigate what I want to do once it is over. Therefore, one of my goals was to get a better picture of this, both through my work and by viewing the work of others.

Factors Contributing to My Goal

The project itself was novel to me: an applied research project using technology (avatars) I had not come into contact with before. One of my interests is research in general, leading me to believe this would be a good avenue to investigate this interest. Aside from this, there are few places better suited to viewing a variety of different projects with different stakeholders than a university.

Then, due to my working with Bart van Gennip, he thought I would be a good fit for a position in the Fontys innovation lab. This was not something that was common at the school, but he expressed a desire to go through the motions and see what the school thought of such a proposition. Luckily, the school was positive. Because of this, I have had the opportunity to apply for a position at Fontys. Even if it falls through or does not seem as interesting as I had hoped, just the experience of applying is a worthwhile contribution to my professional development. It has helped me write a good motivation letter and learn to discover what a job has to offer.

Furthermore, this project has helped me hone the skills needed to work in a team, which will be important in any future position. It has, however, also taught me that I would like to continue working on games, even if it is in my spare time. Games remain my passion, and I would not like to leave it aside.

Have I Achieved This Goal?

Given the work opportunity presented to me and the fact that I have a better picture of what I want to work on in the future, I think the project has helped shape my wishes for my future career.
